Every year in the United States, over 400,000 babies are born prematurely or at a low birth rate. (This is approximately 11% of all births.)

Premature infants are any babies born before 37 weeks gestation.

Percentage of premature births by length of gestation:

- 3.9% of all births occur at 36 weeks
- 5.1% of all births occur between 32-35 weeks
- 1.2% of all births occur between 28-31 weeks
- 0.7% of all births occur before 28 weeks

As a result of being born prematurely, many infants face problems such as:

- brain hemorrhages
- chronic lung disease
- respiratory distress
- visual impairment
- feeding issues
- cerebral palsy
- language delays
- fine and gross motor skills delays
- sensory integration issues
